CHIN

CHIN was created in response to a call for submissions issued by a company that had designed a 'technological oracle' based on the I-Ching. Interpretations of the hexagrams from the book of the i-ching were then requested. This work interprets the hexagram CHIN -Progress (number 35).

Traditionally the meaning of the hexagram is encapsulated in two sections: 'The Judgement' and 'The Image'. Following are The Judgement and The Image relative to Chin.

The Judgement

Progress. The powerful prince
Is honored with horses in large numbers.
In a single day he is granted audience three times.

The Image

The sun rises over the earth:
The image of Progress.
Thus the superior man himself
Brightens his bright virtue

In the work, the visual overlap between the disc of the iris of the Prince pictured and that of the sun, extends to a semantic level, likening the brightening of the Prince and his virtue, spoken of in the description of the hexagram, to the brightening of the day caused by the rising of the sun.

The analogy is a suitable one also because in many places the book of I-Ching speaks of the wise man that rises above the others for his virtues.

In my interpretation, the wise man sees the truth clearly as reality is illuminated by the light shone by his own eye.
